Short-eared Owl

Short-eared owls can be seen during daylight hunting for rodents in open fields although they are not seen very often. If you do ever seen one of these owls here, consider yourself very lucky. This species nests in the ground and perches on small hills or posts which makes them very difficult to spot.

While short-eared owls are seen in Orange County occasionally, they're rarely photographed well and are often seen in places that photographers aren't allowed to access like open fields with oil drilling equipment. These photos were taken on Hawai'i.
