What if you encounter a coyote?

Irrationally feared
One of the most "terrifying" animals in Orange County if you listen to what many people post on social media but in reality it's quite the opposite. People that move into areas that have wildlife need to educate themselves about the wild animals that have always called this land their home before we came in and built our homes and called it ours. Coyotes can be spotted just about anywhere in Orange County since they are highly adapted to live in whatever conditions we have here. Of course coyotes would rather live in nature, human development has not allowed that to happen so much, creating pockets in wilderness between housing tracts.

If you encounter a coyote
You must understand immediately that coyotes don't want anything to do with humans, they're not out looking for humans. Coyotes are just trying to live just like how we are trying to live, however, we can go to the grocery store to get our food while coyotes can't. You also need to understand that a coyotes diet consists mostly of small mammals and rodents so when you introduce a non-native animal like your dog or cat into the coyotes environment, it's your responsibility to keep your pet safe. It's not the coyotes fault for doing what they're supposed to do and what we know that they do, it's your fault if you incorrectly leave your pet in an unsafe manner. Small dogs and cats are on the menu for coyotes so now that you know that, YOU have to keep them safe by keeping them indoors or nearby you when out on a walk. Coyotes are naturally scared of humans.
If a coyote is approaching you and not showing fear, you need to change your behavior so that you instill the fear of humans in that coyote, otherwise you are creating a bigger problem. You need to make yourself appear larger by putting your arms up and waving them around while also yelling. You can also throw things at the coyote, the goal is to assert your dominance over the situation and make the coyote understand that it's risking its life to come near you. As a wild animal, they can't risk getting injured because they can't go to the hospital like we can, an injury usually means death for them. Don't show fear, be brave and show the coyotes who's boss, it's as simple as that. Don't run away and don't leave small children or pets unattended.
