California Ground Squirrel

SIZE

Max Length: 1 ft.

Max Weight: 1.5 lbs.

Native: Yes

Found mostly in open fields, these squirrels do not typically climb trees which is why they're called ground squirrels.California ground squirrels dig burrows underground and sometimes share their burrows with other animals like burrowing owls. They forage on insects, fruits, and various plants and flowers. You can differentiate them from other squirrels by their spotted fur appearance, white around the eyes, and the fact that they will almost always be on the ground. Unlike other squirrels species in OC that you will find by themselves, you will usually find several of these squirrels in one area. Their predators are hawks, owls, coyotes, bobcats, foxes, and weasels.
